Is It Time To Upgrade Your Small Business Server?

Remember 10 years ago? Apple launched iTunes Store. Top film was Finding Nemo. Track suits and cargo pants were back in style!?!

Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 has proved to be a reliable server platform for all your business needs. Your business probably already runs on SBS so... Why is it time to upgrade?

2003 might not seem that long ago, but that was ten years ago this year! Think about that. The data and applications that your business relies on daily, could be running on technology that is 10 years old. That can be a huge risk to your business security and productivity when you consider how quickly technology improves with each year.

Time is past due to upgrade to Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2011! What are the benefits of upgrading? :

  • Improved automatic data backup and recovery
  • Lower risk of server downtime and system crashing
  • Better file storage organization and remote access
  • and much more...

    Written by Victor Palmason

Why do small businesses need IT Support today? 3 main reasons.

Some businesses have felt that during the difficult economic times their IT Support is not a high priority for success. However, when you consider the costs of running a business, making an investment in professional IT Consultant services quickly pays off.

Your largest business costs are your time and your people! Not just payroll costs but how productive your employees time is! Keep your people focused on your business, instead of wasting valuable time, ie... troubleshooting application errors, printers, or waiting on that slow...slow aging computer or network...

3 main reasons to take advantage of a fully managed IT service:

  • 1. Productivity
Who is the expert in your field? You are the expert at running your business. Entrust your wide range of computer issues to dedicated experts that will maintain your systems for greater business productivity.
  • 2. Professional Business Service
Bottom line: Small businesses that invest in IT support and utilize professional consultation services have a higher success rate. No matter what size, small to medium to large corporations.
  • 3. Security
Security of your valuable data is a huge problem for many small businesses. Is your data really backed up and could it be recovered? How about in a disaster? You need preventive measures in place.

    Excel Tip

How to open multiple Excel workbooks in their own window in Windows 7 By default Excel 2010 opens each workbook within one parent Excel window. It makes it hard to work on multiple Excel workbooks side-by-side, and especially frustrating not taking advantage of my dual monitors.

How can I open multiple spreadsheets side-by-side in different windows and across several monitors?

Today's tip is a quick and easy feature of Windows 7

    1. Open first Excel workbook
    2. Hover mouse over the Excel icon in the Windows 7 taskbar (do not click mouse yet)
    3. Hold down SHIFT key
    4. Click Excel icon (single-click)

Excel 2010 opens in a new window. Now in new instance of Excel you can click File tab -> Open to select second workbook. Drag to view both Excel workbook windows side-by-side.

We can fix your Excel spreadsheet problems or Access database issues to work smoother.

Invest a little time today automating processes and it will add up in big savings. Your data is critical to the success of your business.
We can tailor to your business needs and with a little custom tutoring, training we can show you tips to manage your spreadsheets.

We'd really like to gear this conversation towards the other Puget Sound business owners out there who might not have a solid plan when it comes to IT & Computer Support.  At Apex NW Technology Inc., we deal with a lot of the same business-related issues that our clients do.  Marketing, driving the business forward, taxes, internal policies, you name it.  Believe it or not, we also have our own IT infrastructure that needs to be kept up and maintained.  We see the same kinds of expenses (after all, working on our OWN technology internally is time our techs could be doing their jobs).  We've put together a few big mistakes that we've seen businesses make that take much less effort to prevent than they do to fix later on when it is too late.

    So Why ARE Updates Important?

    Written by Victor Palmason

We're asked all time, both by existing clients and during dialog while on boarding new prospects to our Complete Managed Service IT Support Services.  'What exactly is the point of running Windows updates, especially when my workstation or server is running fine?'

We'll cover why updates are so important, discuss a couple ways you can make sure they are always done as well as how we test and prevent "bad updates".

What makes a password strong is the combination of different alphanumeric, special characters, and capitalization that you use, and of course the length of the password.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to remember and type an epistle when I fill out a password field. And, ideally, I don't want to use the same password on many sites, because if one is compromised then my entire life is unlocked.

I want to show you here how to choose very strong passwords for every website that you use, that are different for each website, and are each only 9 characters in length max.

A study found that an 8-character password that's constructed in the manner I'm going to show you has 7.2 quadrillion different combinations, and will take 83.5 days to crack if the hacker can try 1 billion different passwords per second.
